One of the first questions homeowners ask about air duct installation is what it will cost. There is no single answer, because the scope follows the house. Knowing which factors push the work up or down is more useful than a generic figure pulled from a market average that may have nothing to do with your basement.
The size and layout of your home
A larger house with more rooms and more floors takes more trunk line, more branch runs, and more registers than a small, simple layout. An open floor plan can be served by fewer and more direct runs, while a house cut into many rooms across several levels takes a more involved design to reach every space with balanced airflow.
The number of zones matters as much as the square footage. A single open living area takes a simpler duct layout than a house where the original floors and a later addition each have to be balanced on their own, with a separate set of runs and registers for each.
New ductwork versus extending an existing system
Installing a full duct system from scratch, in a house that never had one or in an addition being framed now, is a larger project than extending an existing system to a new room or replacing a failed section inside a system that is otherwise sound. Which of those describes your house sets most of the scope before anyone measures anything.
A home converting from radiators, baseboard heat, or a ductless system to forced air sits at the larger end, since there is no existing infrastructure to build on. A home that already has a trunk line and wants it extended to an addition, or corrected where a branch has failed, involves less new construction, though it takes the same care in planning the route.
How reachable the space is
An unfinished basement or an open attic gives installers a straight path to run duct without opening finished surfaces. Many older New Jersey homes have finished basements, plaster walls, and additions with no chase anywhere near where a new run wants to go, which means more planning and often routing through a closet, a built soffit, or the space beside a chimney chase to get the duct where it belongs.
Material and system type
Sheet metal, flexible duct, and small duct high velocity systems each install differently and suit different houses. A home with room for a traditional trunk and branch layout is a different project from an older house where a compact system that threads through a two by four wall cavity makes more sense. The material also decides how the system sounds and performs once the drywall is back up.
Work beyond the ductwork itself
New ductwork often carries work on either side of it. Pulling out an old, failing system before the new one goes in adds a step. Patching drywall, flooring, or ceiling that had to be opened to route a run comes afterward, especially in a retrofit that crosses finished space. Whether the house is occupied during the work or empty during a renovation changes the sequence and the number of days on site.
The count of registers and returns, the controls tied into the system, and whether the job includes sealing and insulating the existing runs alongside the new ones all add to the scope. None of it is unusual. All of it is why a real number comes from your own house rather than from a description of houses in general.
