When a house is due for new ductwork, either a full replacement or one added run, an early decision is the duct itself. Flexible duct and rigid sheet metal both move conditioned air. They behave differently once they are hung, and each belongs in certain parts of a home more than the other. Knowing which is which lets you follow a technician's recommendation instead of taking it on faith.
What Rigid Duct Is and Where It Belongs
Rigid duct is typically galvanized sheet metal formed into rectangular trunk lines or round pipe sections, joined together and sealed at each connection. Its smooth interior surface lets air move through with less resistance, which matters most on the main trunk lines that carry the largest volume of air from the furnace or air handler. Rigid duct also holds its shape under weight, which makes it the practical choice in unfinished basements, mechanical rooms, and any run that has to support insulation, hangers, or foot traffic nearby.
What Flexible Duct Is and Where It Belongs
Flexible duct is a coiled wire frame wrapped in an inner liner and an outer insulated jacket, and it bends around obstacles that rigid metal cannot turn past. In tight attic spaces, between floor joists, or squeezed through a finished wall cavity during a renovation, flexible duct often makes an installation possible where rigid metal would require cutting into framing or ceilings. Many New Jersey homes, especially capes and colonials with cramped attic access, rely on flexible duct for the final branch runs that reach individual rooms.
Airflow and Long Term Performance
The tradeoff comes down to airflow. A rigid duct's smooth interior lets air glide through with minimal drag. Flexible duct has a ribbed interior that creates more friction, and if it is installed with slack, sags, or sharp bends, that friction gets worse and airflow drops in that room. Properly installed flexible duct, pulled taut and supported every few feet, performs well for shorter branch runs. The problem is almost never the material itself, it is installation quality, which is why a rushed or careless install tends to show up later as a room that never quite feels right.
Insulation and Noise Considerations
Flexible duct comes with insulation built into its outer jacket, which limits heat gain or loss along the run without adding a separate installation step. Rigid metal duct has to be wrapped or lined as a separate step, particularly on runs passing through an unconditioned attic or crawl space, since condensation can form on a bare metal surface during humid months. Rigid duct can also carry more vibration and noise from a blower motor than flexible duct does, since flexible material tends to dampen sound as air moves through it. A poorly supported flexible run can develop its own rattling or flapping noise over time, which is one more reason proper support along the length of the run matters as much as the material choice itself.
What Most New Jersey Homes End Up Using
In practice, most well built systems use both. Rigid duct carries air from the furnace or air handler through the main trunk, and flexible duct branches off to reach individual rooms, especially in tighter spaces like attic ceilings in Cranford or Rockaway, or knee wall crawl spaces common in older Bergen County capes. New construction and additions with more open framing sometimes allow for more rigid duct throughout, since there is room to route it cleanly. Older housing stock, where the ductwork has to work around existing joists and finished ceilings, usually calls for a mix, with flexible duct doing the work rigid metal cannot reach.
Getting the Installation Right the First Time
Choosing between flexible and rigid duct is one part of the decision. Sizing each run, sealing every joint, and strapping flexible sections so they cannot sag or kink later matter as much as the material stamped on the jacket. A taut, well supported flexible branch will outperform a rigid run that was sized by eye.
