Many of the dryer vent problems homeowners live with were not caused by anything they did. They trace back to how the vent was put in, often during a past renovation, a weekend project, or original construction that never considered how the laundry area would get used. A few mistakes show up far more often than the rest.
Using the wrong material
White vinyl and foil accordion style flexible duct are still sold in hardware stores and still show up behind dryers across New Jersey, even though they are a poor fit for the job. Both materials sag over time, and the ridges inside catch lint at every wrinkle in a way a smooth wall never does. They also crush easily when the dryer gets pushed back against the wall. Too many bends or a longer run than the house requires
Sometimes the run takes a longer or more twisted path than the layout calls for, either because of a shortcut during installation or a dryer parked farther from the exterior wall than it had to be. Improper support and fasteners
How a run is supported along its length matters more than it looks. Duct that sags between straps creates a low point where lint and moisture collect instead of moving through with the air. Venting into an unsafe space
One of the more serious mistakes we come across is a run that was never carried outdoors at all, ending instead in an attic, a crawl space, or a garage. Moist, lint filled exhaust piling into an enclosed space is a hidden problem, because the moisture and debris collect where nobody looks until mold, pest activity, or a musty smell gives it away. A missing or damaged termination cap leaves the run open to pests and weather. Sections joined with ordinary cloth tape instead of metal tape or clamps pull apart as the adhesive dries out, leaving gaps where lint escapes into a wall cavity or a ceiling space instead of reaching the outside.

Because so many of these faults sit inside walls, attics, or crawl spaces, a homeowner has no way to know a mistake was made until a symptom surfaces, slow drying, a burning smell, or lint turning up where it has no business being. Most of these faults are correctable without opening up the whole house, once someone has seen the entire run rather than the end of it.
