A dryer vent already carries warm, moist air out of the house on every cycle. When outdoor humidity is high, the temperature gap between the air inside the duct and the air outside narrows, which slows how fast that moisture clears the system. Moisture and lint are worse together than lint alone

Summer buildup behaves differently, because the lint picks up ambient moisture from the humid air moving past it and settles instead of passing through, at bends and low points in particular. Signs summer humidity is working on your vent

A musty smell that appears only in summer, even though the vent seemed fine over the winter, is another sign, since it usually means moisture is sitting somewhere in the system long enough to grow something.

What helps during the humid months
Running a dehumidifier in a basement laundry room lowers the ambient moisture the vent has to work against, though it does not stand in for a cleaning. Keeping the run as short and straight as the layout allows helps too, since a shorter path gives damp lint less distance to travel and fewer bends to settle in.
