The shortest path to an exterior wall wins

The shortest, straightest path from the dryer to a nearby exterior wall gives the best result, because it holds down both the length and the number of turns the air has to work through. Where the laundry room sits against an outside wall, that is an easy call. The interesting problem is the interior laundry room, common in New Jersey basements and additions, where no exterior wall is anywhere close.

Every bend has a cost

Each turn cuts airflow and gives lint one more ledge to settle on. A run with two gentle turns will outperform a run with five over the same distance.
