A home addition changes more than the footprint of a house. It also changes how much conditioned air the existing heating and cooling system has to deliver, and where. A kitchen bump out, a second story, a finished basement, and a sunroom all raise the same question, and the ductwork plan deserves the same attention as the framing and the electrical drawings. Left until the walls are closed up, it becomes the hardest part of the project to fix.
Why an addition puts new strain on an existing system
Furnaces and air conditioners are sized for the square footage and layout of a home as it stood on the day the system went in. Adding a room, or an entire floor, increases the volume of space that system has to heat and cool, without increasing its capacity. Even a well maintained furnace can end up straining to keep a new addition comfortable if nobody accounted for the added load, and the ductwork feeding that space is usually the first place the mismatch shows up.

There are two broad approaches to ducting a new space. Sunrooms and enclosed porches, common in towns like Marlboro and Howell, sit exposed to outdoor temperature swings on three sides, so they hold their temperature far better on a run of their own than on a small branch tapped off an existing line.
Signs the ductwork was not planned properly
When ductwork for an addition is undersized or poorly routed, the signs show up inside the first year. The new room runs warmer or colder than the rest of the house depending on the season. Airflow at its registers feels weak next to the older rooms. In some cases the new branch pulls enough air away from the existing system that rooms which were comfortable before the addition are no longer comfortable after it. None of this is unusual. All of it is avoidable with a duct plan settled before the drywall goes up.
Planning it right from the start
The best time to plan ductwork for an addition is before construction begins, while ceilings and stud bays are still open and a technician can trace exactly where a run will travel, where it will cross a joist, and where it will pick up its return.
